Details: With a father and grandfather who went to sea, it is perhaps hardly surprising that Ivan Hazelton followed his forbears' calling. Away in the coasting trade, under sail, from his home in Ipswich, Ivan was to experience all the moods of the North Sea, its tides and weather, carrying cargo in war and peacetime.

He was just fourteen years old when he first signed on, already familiar with the Thames sailing barges from the many hours he had spent around the local docks when an inquisitive child. This grounding was to stand him in good stead, for he was to gain his first command, the sailing barge Saltcote Belle, just three weeks past his eighteenth birthday.
